Online/PC Games 2010-2016
Recently games have become increasingly photo-realistic, triple- A titles have life-like cars, people, and environment nowadays. Amazing games such as The Last of Us, Battlefield III/IV, Assassin’s Creed, Crysis, Portal, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, along with an ungodly amount of zombie games were released during this timeframe. Interestingly, a trend consisting of zombies and MOBAs plague this era. When I say plague, I do not even mean it as an exaggeration. In the years 2013-2014, over 530 MOBAs were created due to supply-and-demand.
I can only assume people are shifting away from traditional RPGs and are moving to MOBAs. Unlike MOBAs however, I know for certain why zombies have made more appearances in video games recently. Due to the amazing success of pc game titles such as the Left 4 Dead series in 2008- 2009 and The Walking Dead TV series in 2010- 2016 , a zombie apocalypse has become a very popular theme for games.
You will notice that we shift away from innovation and lean towards graphics. I mean the most innovative game we have gotten thus far would be Minecraft for Christ’s sake.
League of Legends by Riot – 2009
Okay, I know this one was released in 2009 but it was only a couple of months away from 2010 and didn’t even get popular until 2012 so we’re including it in this era. So the big question is: “Why is League so successful?” League of legends is successful because it was a copy of Valve’s very- popular game DOTA. It was considered the successor to DOTA and pulled away at its player base. League’s truly free-to-play model along with great communication and developer competence is what made it surpass its successor DOTA.
Minecraft by Mojang, 4J, Microsoft – 2011
In an era full of redundant, yet graphically beautiful games, how does one make their game stand out? By making it look like crap, yet innovative. What makes Minecraft so enjoyable for many people? The same thing that made Dungeons and Dragons enjoyable: the ability to create your own world. Minecraft is by far the most underwhelming graphically, but the gameplay is more innovative. Mojang decided to take many steps back graphically, and many advances forward in their sandbox, open-world, do-whatever-you-want MMORPG. Minecraft is popular throughout all ages; many adults make a living creating Minecraft entertainment videos on YouTube. This just goes to show you don’t need a game that eats and breathes hardware resources to make a profit. Minecraft’s create-your-own-story is its best selling point since creativity never ages, therefore appealing to a vast target audience. Microsoft saw the potential in this and bought Mojang for over 2 billion dollars.
Overwatch by Blizzard – 2016
Overwatch is a long-awaited shooter game from Blizzard ever since it debuted at Blizzcon in 2014. Blizzard is better known for their World of Warcraft MMORPG so people are having their doubts on whether or not they are competent when it comes to the FPS genre. My personal opinion is that if Blizzard has an unlimited number of resources, they will make it work.
As previously stated, this is an era of very little innovation when it comes to PC gaming unfortunately. Overwatch does nothing unique to stand out from the pack of shooter games however, it is very polished and the character movement seems very fluid. Overwatch has 21 unique characters you can play as, each with a charming and unique personality that will provides you many different ways of slaying noobs. Overwatch releases June 2016 and I will be trying it out for myself.
